Safe Shopping Tips |
Surveys now show that nearly 60% of all Internet users express concerns about the safety aspects of online shopping. While it’s true that cyber crimes do happen, shopping online, however, is actually less risky than shopping at your neighborhood mall. That’s a fact! Even so, we thought it might help if we passed along a few tips to relieve any concerns you may have about protecting your online credit card transactions. |

Tip #1 – Shop at Safe Stores. |
Most online retailers, even most of the Internet’s small stores, offer secure online shopping through sophisticated credit card encryption systems. Be smart and confine your shopping to stores that process their orders through these encryption systems. Before making a purchase, especially at an unfamiliar store, look for the store’s safe-shopping seal, which is usually displayed on the homepage. |

Tip #2 – Use a Credit Card. |

Oddly enough, it’s generally safer to pay for your purchases with your credit card, not with a money order, check or a bank debit card. Credit cards are safer because they offer federally mandated fraud protection, which limits your maximum liability to $50. Money orders, checks and bank debit cards usually don’t offer theft or fraud protection, unless the issuing company extends its own theft or fraud protection. |

Tip #3 – Mum’s the Word! |
Never give out unnecessary information, especially your social security number, unless you are absolutely sure the requested information is needed to complete a legitimate transaction. Be particularly aware of email offers that tote unbelievable deals on all sorts of goods and services. Don’t fall for these offers and, moreover, never respond to any offer that requires you to submit personal information. |

Tip #4 – Check your Credit Report. |
It’s a good idea to check your credit report occasionally to verify the status of your credit card accounts. If you discover an unknown new account, or notice suspicious charges on one of your existing accounts, it’s likely that someone has somehow stolen your account information. Needless to say, take prompt action and report any credit report discrepancies you catch to the appropriate credit card company. |

Tip #5 – Download with Caution. |
Be very careful about downloading files from unfamiliar sites, particularly from foreign sites. Crafty criminals can implant destructive programs that can wipe out your files, steal important documents, and even redial your phone to foreign telephones, resulting in enormous charges. Remember this: downloads are like loaded guns; so handle each download very carefully. |

Unfortunately, nobody as yet has devised a sure-proof way prevent credit card fraud, either on the Internet or at any store anywhere. But if you heed the safety tips above, you will certainly reduce your chances are ever becoming victimized by any type credit card scheme.
